Module Syllabus & Overview

Welcome to Module 07: Security Fundamentals!

In Modules 01 through 06, you constructed the operational pillars of modern infrastructure. You established raw Linux kernel primitives (namespaces, cgroups), wired edge reverse proxies, adopted Git for version control, and packaged microservice architectures into immutable container images (Docker).

However, building highly optimized, blazing-fast cloud infrastructure is completely useless if your architecture is wide open to automated cyberattacks. In the modern cloud landscape, security is no longer an afterthought bolted on by a separate cybersecurity team right before release. Automated hacker botnets scan public IP ranges within seconds of deployment, searching for open database ports, exposed AWS secret keys, unpatched container CVEs, and compromised upstream code dependencies.

In modern enterprise environments, security must be Shifted Left—engineered directly into the foundational fabric of the platform by Platform Engineers and Site Reliability Engineers.

This module bridges your containerization and system administration knowledge directly into elite DevSecOps workflows. By the end of this module, you will establish the essential DevSecOps engineering capabilities required to conduct structured Threat Modeling exercises (STRIDE), execute automated container vulnerability scans (trivy image), enforce strong cryptographic secret management (sops, HashiCorp Vault), and generate immutable Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs) to secure your software supply chain.

  • Why am I learning this? Modern cloud platforms are under continuous, automated attack. If you cannot identify architectural threats, scan containers for CVEs, encrypt sensitive secrets, or verify where your software dependencies come from, your platform will inevitably suffer a catastrophic security breach.
  • How will I use it? You will use these exact skills to perform Threat Modeling (STRIDE), execute container security audits (trivy image), encrypt configuration secrets before committing them to Git (sops -e), generate SBOM manifests (syft), and cryptographically sign container images (cosign sign).
  • Where does this fit into Platform Engineering? Security forms the protective outer shield of Stage 2 (Platform Foundation) and acts as the mandatory quality gate for Stage 4 (CI/CD GitOps Automation). Every single container image or Terraform module deployed in a modern enterprise must pass automated DevSecOps validation checks.
  • What problem does it solve? It solves the catastrophic dangers of exposed plain-text API keys in GitHub, unpatched high-severity container vulnerabilities (e.g., Log4j), privilege escalation attacks, and compromised third-party software dependencies (Software Supply Chain attacks).
  • Where will I use it later? You will use these skills directly in Module 08 (Terraform IAM Least Privilege), Module 10 (Kubernetes Role-Based Access Control - RBAC), Module 11 (Automated CI/CD Vulnerability Scanning in GitHub Actions), Module 12 (Service Mesh Mutual TLS - mTLS), and Module 15 (AI/ML Data Privacy & Model Poisoning Prevention).
